Facilities at the Language Resource Center

The Language Resource Center has facilities for both group and individual study.

Group Areas--Policies on Reservations and Use

  • LRC facilities may be reserved by course heads or by TFs/staff assistants acting on behalf of a course head.
  • Advance reservations or standing reservations can be accepted only from foreign-language courses or from foreign-language-related courses, e.g., core courses of the FC designation.
  • Other FAS courses may reserve LRC facilities, when available, no more than 72 hours in advance.
  • Non-FAS Harvard University courses/departments are generally ineligible to use or reserve LRC facilities. Faculty/departments requesting exceptions for special circumstances/events should contact the Director.

Viewing/Screening Rooms

Camera Con Vista Camera Con Vista is the larger room, and can hold 18 students. This room has a large screen TV, DVD player, VCR, and computer. The VCR in this room can play both NTCS and PAL format tapes. The DVD player in this room is region-free, allowing viewing of DVD's from most countries. Audio CD's can be played using the computer.
Das Fernsehzimmer Das Fernsehzimmer is the smaller room, holding up to 10 students. This room has an enormous wall-mounted plasma screen for viewing DVD's from all zones as well as VHS videos of all major international standards. The instructor can also display the computer desktop on the plasma for group software instruction, etc. This room also has a theatrical-quality built-in audio system.

Computing Areas:

There are two open area computing sections appropriate for group use. In addition, larger classes can reserve additional computers in the aisles.

PC Group Computing Area The Dell PC group computing area (Windows XP computers) has six computers and an open center area. Several computers have VCR's, and all are capable of multiple headsets per computer, allowing students to share a station.
Mac Group Computing Area The Macintosh group computing area has six Macintosh computers (Mac OS X) in a open group setting. Some can handle multiple headsets, allowing students to share a computer station.

Sony Audio System:

Analog Audio Area The LRC has a Sony 1200 Audio System located in carrels 7 - 24. This area can be reserved for class use by instructors. The master console allows an instructor to listen individually to students, pair up students, broadcast a tape to all students, and more. Student consoles allow students to record their own voice on a second track.

Individual Use Areas:

Computing Carrells Computer Carrels: 60 stations, equipped with both Windows XP and Mac OS X machines. These powerful computers are specially configured for accessing high-bandwidth online video course materials at near-DVD quality and are set up to support multilingual Web browsing, Word processing with editing and proofing tools in more than 40 languages, as well as some specialized software programs designed specifically for language study.
Music Listening Area

Music Listening Room: A small number of listening stations supports Extension School music courses. This area also has multistandard VHS viewing stations for use by individuals or pairs.

Reading Area Reading Area: There is a small reading area with two armchairs and a small table at the back or the LRC. It provides a quiet area to read, study, or use your own laptop computer (power outlets are available). The windows provide a scenic view of Harvard Square.
International TV Area International TV area: Located across from the LRC Front Desk are two television monitors with access to international TV. Several armchairs are available, and wireless headsets may be checked out from the Front Desk. More on International TV >>

Wheelchair and Accessibility Stations:

  • The Language Resource Center Wheelchair Access Stations are located in carrels #6 (Mac and VCR), and #63 (PC). Both the keyboard tray and desk can be height adjusted using the levers located under the keyboard tray. The lever on the left allows you to raise and lower the tray, the lever on the right allows you to raise and lower the entire desk.
  • Two more accessibility stations are located in carrels #24 (PC, Sony Audio Console, and VCR) and #39 (Mac and VCR). These stations have larger desk spaces and larger flat panel displays.

Quad Library:

Two workstations with access to the LRC's networked resources are located at the Quad Library. These workstations can be found on the round table in the stacks room to the left of the main entrance to the Hilles building. You can spot them easily because their widescreen displays are different from those of ordinary library computers.
