LRC QuickTime Audio

QuickTime Basics

LRC audio files require QuickTime 5. If you do not have the latest version of QuickTime, you should download it at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/.

We recommend that you alter some QuickTime settings so that you don't end up with too many QuickTime Player windows open at once.

  • Under the Edit menu, select Preferences and Player Preferences....
  • Make sure "Open movies in new players" is NOT selected. [Windows users may find that new windows open regardless of this setting.]
  • Select "Automatically play movies when opened"
  • Whether or not you choose to change the settings above, please make sure "Play sound in frontmost player only" is selected.
  • Click "OK".

.qtl Files

The LRC uses qtl files to cause QuickTime movie files to open in an external QuickTime Player window.

Macintosh Netscape 4 users should change the settings below to use qtl files. Windows users, or Macintosh users of Internet Explorer or Netscape 6, do not need to change their settings.

  • In the Netscape Edit menu, select Preferences...
  • In the category "Navigator", select Applications.
  • Click New, and fill in the Edit Type menu:
    • Description: QTL
    • MIME Type: application/x-quicktimeplayer
    • Suffixes: qtl
    • Handled by: Application. Click Choose, and find your QuickTime folder. Inside it, select QuickTime Player and click Open.
    • Your Edit Type window should look like the one below. Click OK.

Troubleshooting

File Stops Playing

Some of the LRC audio files are several megabytes in size. If you are on a slower connection, and especially if you are on a modem, they may take a while to download. If a file stops playing while the progress indicator is in the middle of the file, it may be because the rest of the file has not downloaded yet.

How to tell: The part of the file that has been downloaded is indicated with solid lines in the progress bar. The part of the file that has not yet been downloaded is indicated with dotted lines.

Quicktime partial download

If your file shows dotted lines, your download is incomplete. If it shows only dotted lines to the right of the triangular indicator that shows where you are in the file, there is no more of the file to be played yet.

Quicktime download ends at indicator

Please be patient, and press play when the solid lines indicate that the download has finished.

No QuickTime 5

If you don't want to or cannot upgrade to QuickTime 5, you can still open LRC files manually in a separate QuickTime player window.

  • Instead of clicking on a link, copy the link.
  • Run QuickTime Player.
  • In the File menu, select Open URL.
  • Paste the link into the Open URL window.
  • At the end of the link, change ".qtl" to ".mov".
  • Click OK.
